Main Idea

We have been using a really cool table graphic organizer to find main idea and details. Pictured below...

The kids get a kick out of trying to make their table stand up. My student teacher tells them that without the details there would be no main idea. Just like there would be no table without the legs!

We were to focus on nonfiction multiparagraph texts which is new to us in second grade. So we were looking for all kinds of new passages.

I decided to write some passages myself and make cards to go along with them as well as matching graphic organizers.

There were several detail cards some correct and some incorrect. They had to choose the correct details that went along with the main idea.

I also made a couple main idea cards with correct and incorrect main ideas to make sure the students were really reading the passage!

The pictures on the cards corresponded to the picture on the passage.

For my higher level students, I don't give them the cards to make the center a little more challenging!
